Although society has made significant strides towards equality over the last decade, men's beauty and wellness treatments still carry a stamp. Places like barbershops have traditionally been heavily male-dominated spaces, while salons/spas are the complete opposite. We think it's time to break the stereotype that salons and spas are exclusively female. In this blog, we want to educate everyone on how to engage your customers and appeal to both men and women.
The environment you create in your salon/beauty shop is the most important factor a man considers when booking an appointment. Consider creating spaces in your salon that are gender neutral. In a gender-neutral space, customers who are not as familiar with your services will feel much more comfortable walking into that space. Make sure spaces like your waiting areas are male-friendly. Men are more likely to refer you to you when they know they will be more comfortable in your salon.
When we talk about the environment, it's important to also consider your "virtual" environment. Make sure your social feed is inclusive and includes content that men enjoy. Most will do a quick Google search before booking a treatment. Make sure your treatment menu is updated on your website and social media. Be as clear and transparent as possible so clients know what to expect when they arrive at your salon.
DIVIDE YOUR MENU
We encourage you to make a list of all the services you offer to men. This could include; Facial treatments, eyelash lifting, eyelash tinting, eyebrow correction, face and neck shaving, pedicure and manicure.
Try not to mix up these services with those offered to women. By dividing your menu, male customers can quickly get an overview of the services offered and make a quicker decision on whether to book an appointment. Again, this helps new clients who are unfamiliar with your business feel more comfortable booking an appointment because they can decide ahead of time what treatment they want.
LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
Acquiring male customers can be difficult at first. However, we believe the best way to expedite this is through referrals. Talk to your clients who have brothers, friends, spouses, etc.! Why not offer both of you a little referral discount for a treatment? Even if your clients are coming to your salon for the first time as a couple, it's a lot less daunting than a one-on-one treatment. A positive experience such as a price reduction at the beginning of the treatment creates a good atmosphere for further treatments and encourages customers to return.
PRODUCTS FOR RETAIL
Provides guidance and advice on products that best meet your customers' needs. Most people are not averse to spending money on products that make them look and feel better. Displays the products near the waiting area so customers can browse at their leisure.
